Area 8 Youth Issues Group
There is a recognition in The Meadows, Dunkirk and Lenton, as elsewhere, that Young People's skills issues need special attention. This is particularly so since there is no secondary school in Area 8, and therefore young people attend over 14 schools across the City and County of Nottingham. (See 2006 Local Learning Plan under Area Learning/Learning Plans 2006) Theme 6 of the Plan that deals with Children & Young People's needs). Connexions is the organisation tasked with supporting young people not in education, employment or training, and they make their contacts mostly through secondary schools. The Meadows Partnership Trust hosts an employment project, however that does not specifically support young people with skills needs, (although an employment adviser carries out outreach regularly at Meadows venues e.g. the Youth and Community Centre). They work in partnership with Connexions (an adviser has clinic every Wednesday afternoon for young people from ethnic minority backgrounds) and Prince's Trust also is in attendance on the same day. See contacts below. Meadows Partnership Trust also hosts a Young People's Action Group: their long term aim is to set up a Youth Improvement Partnership for The Meadows. Partners such as Groundwork Greater Nottingham, Youth Services, Supporting Communities all participate. Linda Brodie (Community Engagement Officer) is the contact for information or membership of this group on 0115 - 9150084 Also in The Meadows there is the E2E (Education to Employment) project which operates from Meaodws Youth & Community Centre. There young people can learn a range of skills, including literacy & numeracy, and access a range of support. Lax Sandhu is the Coordinator of this project.
