Profile of Area 8, The Meadows, Dunkirk & Lenton

Area 8 comprises two Wards, Bridge & Dunkirk and Lenton.  Within these wards there are pockets of multiple deprivation (Super Output Areas) which are ranked amongst the worst 10 – 20% in the country in terms of low levels of education, skills and training.  For example, at the time of 2001 Census, some 3,572 people in the area were without any qualifications and a significant amount of the local population only possessed entry level literary and numeracy skills.  The area also suffers from significant levels of unemployment.

Current work focuses around the City Strategy, Skills for Jobs and JOBMAETS (See Glossary)

Since April 2007 Area Learning activities have focused on the 9 Neighbourhood Renewal priority Wards (Arboretum, Aspley, Basford, Bridge, Bulwell, Bestwood, St. Ann's, Dales, and Bilborough - therefore no resources are available to support Dunkirk and Lenton.  Chrissie Wells continues to work in The Meadows to support the Meadows Local Employability Partnership, based at the Meadows One Stop Shop.

The current main focus is to address the issue of Worklessness, supporting people on benefits into work. Key client groups are people on Incapacity Benefit, Black & Minority Ethnic communities, and Families with Children on low income. We aim to ensure that local primary schools, (under the Extended Schools Programme) local libraries and community centres are best able to deliver a broad and co-ordinated programme of opportunities to cater for all ages and abilities.  For example, in some of our residential areas there are voluntary and community organisations running training opportunities in conjunction with mainstream Colleges.  We recognise that there is no secondary school in the area and are therefore trying to increase provision for young people in particular.  The area also hosts a varied cultural mix, including people for whom English is a second language.  We are also working to better co-ordinate ESOL provision and basic skills needs for this group.  At the same time we hope to engage more people in current activity through the team of Learning Champions to champion opportunities for skills development.
