Area 6 is comprised of two wards, St Ann’s and The Dales, both of which contain pockets of multiple deprivation (Super Output Areas) which rank amongst the worst 10% in the country. St Anns St Anns is affected by extreme health issues, low levels of education and training and high instances of crime. As such, some the residents suffer from low levels of confidence and limited aspirations. We are addressing these issues by working with local partners to engage people in a broad range of learning and skills development activities. Many of the activities have embedded Basic Skills and ICT qualifications which is a priority identified within the Local Learning Plan. The Dales The Dales contains 6 pockets of extreme deprivation which are ranked in the worst 10% in the country. Residents are affected by high incidences of crime and, as in St Ann’s, building confidence and raising aspirations is crucial to reducing high unemployment and skill levels. Despite a reasonable number of learning venues, our biggest challenge is to engage a wider diversity of the community. One of the ways in which we are achieveing this is through our Learning Champions, who undertake extensive outreach work into the community.
