The Adult and Community Learning Strategic Group was formed to look at a specific area of activity on behalf of the GNLP Board and to develop strategic responses to priority issues. The group have recently revised their role and remit to fit with new strategic structures.
Scope of the Adult and Community Learning Strategic Group
The group will focus on addressing the needs of adults through the development of adult and community learning including:
Learning which contributes to skills enhancement and employability
Learning which addresses personal development, skills for life, citizenship, enterprise, confidence, motivation & aspirations
Learning which improves quality of life
Primary focus will be on engaging current non-learners from communities experiencing social or economic deprivation e.g. neighbourhood renewal areas, or where participation rates are low.
Role of the group
- To ensure congruence in the planning processes for adult and community learning which meets individual learner needs and those of the local labour market & to act as a conduit to inform LSC planning.
To evaluate the choice available to all adult learners across the conurbation to ensure appropriate distribution of provision at all relevant levels to ensure coherence & gap filling where necessary
To inform future funding bidding rounds including co financing priorities
To contribute to the achievement of national & local targets for adult learning, basic skills & progression
To support the development of the Voice of the Learner model & local learning planning
Membership and commitment
- Membership should represent the range of interests in ACL rather than those of their parent organisation
Membership should be consistent (no substitute attendance)
The group will report regularly to the Greater Nottingham Skills Board and to a wider constituency on the progress of the group via the website. The group will be serviced by the GNSP executive staff
Activity to date includes
Evaluating Voice of the Learner activity and strengthening the framework of local learning partnerships by establishing the Area Learning Facilitator team and overseeing the development of local learning plans using a toolkit to ensure consistency.
Development of ERDF Access Centres strategy
Informing funding priorities of partners, including recommendations for GNP Single Pot.
Overseeing transition plan on Broxtowe estate, leading to the establishment of the DfES Testbed Learning Community
Planned activities
The following areas of work have been identified as key themes & priority activities for the group
Sustainability of provision/impact of changes to mainstream & discretionary funding, including the impact on relationships between sectors.
Increasing the impact of community based Information, Advice & Guidance
Curriculum issues e.g. integrating basic skills or employability skills into community based provision; tackling low aspirations
Completing ERDF Access Centres programme
Strategies for particular target groups e.g. 2nd or 3rd generation unemployed, travellers, offenders
Input to Local Strategic Partnership Community Strategies and other relevant strategies
